Location - May Island - Firth of Forth Site Name - The SS Island (map) Max Depth - 15
Suitable for Training: No
Site: Rock and sand slope, littered with wreckage Notes: Locate the rusting metal, visible on the shore of the East side of May Island, this marks the beginning of a debris field. 10-15 metres from shore should put you in at around 8 metres. The sand and rock slope works it's way East away from the island. Wreckage here includes sheets of metal hull and a full intact large prop. Lots of life here including shoals of mackeral, lobster and monkfish.
The Island was a Danish Steamship (formerly Danish Royal Yacht) - Gross 1774 tonnes. 250' x 40'. Bound from Reykjavik to Leith. Lost in heavy fog, she ran aground on 13 April 1937 on the east side of Isle of May. The wreck is in position N56 11' 02" W2 32' 52", broken up and scattered between South Ness and Island Rocks. There may be another wreck in the area. The bows are visible 12 metres up on the cliffs, the remainder in 13 metres depth with wreckage 3 metres above the seabed. The seabed is a mixture of rock and sand. The wreck is owned by Perth Branch BSAC.
Site Specific Risks: Exposed in the Forth, with the island to the West as shelter, this can only be dived with no wind or westerly, providing enough protection is offered from the May. |
